We don't have many details, but the bible records the following mocking and beating of the Son of God:
Matt. 27:27 Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole Roman cohort around Him.
28 They stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him.
29 And after twisting together a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand; and they knelt down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"
30 They spat on Him, and took the reed and began to beat Him on the head.
31 After they had mocked Him, they took the scarlet robe off Him and put His own garments back on Him, and led Him away to crucify Him.
John 19:1 Pilate then took Jesus and scourged Him.
2 And the soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him;
3 and they began to come up to Him and say, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and to give Him slaps in the face.
Senator Obama is preaching hope. His second book is titled The Audacity of Hope. The idea is we should DARE to hope. Let me tell you, human beings have DARED to do a lot of things - and one of those things is spit on Jesus Christ! The only real hope rests in Jesus Christ, and until we come to grips with that and submit to Him, there is NO hope for us. The real audacity is that men DARED to kill their own Savior. Whenever we sin, we dare to shake our fist in God's face saying, "I'll do it my own way, thank You very much!" That's audacity. Maybe we ought to have a book titled The Audacity of Submission.
There were men who stood over the bloody body of Jesus and kept striking Him with scourges. There were men who stood around taunting the One who could, with a single thought, remove them forever from the face of the earth. There were men who drove nails into the hands of the One who had legions of angels at His disposal, any ONE of which could wipe out entire armies! What amazing love put up with that kind of abuse! It is humbling to consider the forgiveness and mercy Jesus showed us on that terrible day. It was the most terrible day in history. It was the most wonderful day in history.
