There are many FIRSTS in the book of Genesis. The earth was first formed with everything in it. Time first began. There was the first man and woman: Adam and Eve. There were the first commands of God: keep the garden and don't eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The first sin came about when Adam and Eve broke God's commandment not to eat of the tree. The first murder happened rather quickly in human history: Cain killed Abel. God gave His first prophecy of the coming of His Son, Jesus, in Genesis 3:15.

Some beginnings are good and some are evil. But it is valuable to study the beginning. There are multitudes of lessons to be learned from even the first couple of chapters of the book of Genesis. I'll be taking a little time with this book over the next few days.

Did you know Genesis is divided into ELEVEN logical sections? Moses, through the direction of the Holy Spirit, wrote the book in a very logical format.

1. "In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1-2:3): The account of creation

2. "the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created" (Genesis 2:4-4:26): A closer look at creation and some of the first events

3. "the book of the generations of Adam" (Genesis 5:1-6:8): An account of the generations from Adam to Noah

4. "the records of the generations of Noah" (Genesis 6:9-9:29): An account of Noah and his sons

5. "the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah" (Genesis 10:1-11:9): The "table of nations" and the tower of Babel

6. "the records of the generations of Shem" (Genesis 11:10-26): A closer look at the family of Shem (the one through whom Christ would come)

7. "the records of the generations of Terah" (Genesis 11:27-25:11): An account of Terah (Abraham's father) and Abraham

8. "the records of the generations of Ishmael" (Genesis 25:12-18): An account of Abraham's seed through Ishmael (Hagar's son)

9. "the records of the generations of Isaac" (Genesis 25:19-35:29): An account of Abraham's seed through Isaac and Jacob

10. "the records of the generations of Esau" (Genesis 36): An account of Isaac's seed through Esau

11. "the records of the generations of Jacob" (Genesis 37-50): An account of Isaac's seed through Jacob and his 12 sons until the death of Joseph in Egypt

Pretty cool, huh?

God bless,
Nathan
